Doug is
a Professor and Coach at the New Mexico State
University who has earned an outstanding reputation
in the field of physical fitness.
He teaches anatomy, motor development, principles
of strength & conditioning, tests &
measurements, and beginning, advanced, women's,
and Olympic weightlifting at NMSU. Doug owns
and operates a Sports Performance Center called
Briggs Barbell Club. He is also the Strength
& Conditioning Coordinator for the US
ARMY/MWR at Fort Bliss, Texas and works with
the military designing programs, mobile gyms,
etc.
Doug began weight training in 1978 and within
three years became involved in powerlifting. He
styarted appreciating Olympic weightlifting in 1980
but didn't pursue it exclusively until 1991. Since
then, he has competed in at least 75 contests and
has set numerous (over 100) state records. He has
coached and competed internationally and won a Gold
Medal in the 94 kg class at the Pan American Master's
Weightlifting Championships in Canada, setting a
new snatch record. Several months ago, Doug competed
in the Masters' National meet in Savannah, GA and
qualified for the World Championship in Baden, Austria
in October. He continues to train hard in anticipation
of this event and we would like to take this opportunity
to wish him a well deserved place on the podium!
Over
the years Coach Briggs has trained many athletes
helping them to push to the limits of their
performance. Doug proudly shared with us,
student, Cassi Cole's latest achievements.
On June 5, 2004, Cassi, a 17-year old lifter
set 9 state records at the New Mexico State
Championships. She set 2 Junior records and
7 schoolage records in her first meet and
most amazingly, qualified for the Schoolage
Nationals!
Doug wrote a textbook that was published
in 2003 entitled, "16 Weeks to Weight
Training Success - A Basic Approach"
by Kendall/Hunt Publishing. This comprehensive
guide that involves all facets of weight training
is a "must-read" for both the novice
and seasoned weightlifter.
For the past 27
weeks, Doug has participated in the RobertUniverse
Intl. Weightlifting Case Study sponsored by
FLORA Health. It has been an honour to have Doug participate
in this important project and we wish to thank him
for his valuable contributions so far.
Doug not only exhibits all the qualities
of an extraordinary athlete, but his
warm personality ranks him high on our list!
It was only fitting to nominate Doug RobertUniverse.com
Athlete of the Month! Footnote: We wish
to thank Doug for sharing with our viewers,
the wonderful photos of his son, Alexander
Maximus. Only four years old and already
showing signs of a real champion weightlifter!
