By twelfth grade only twenty percent of students are achieving the appropriate levels of cardiovascular fitness. This problem is only getting worse over time and requires immediate action. The Youth Fitness Initiative, sponsored by Body Mechanics Wellness Foundation, is working to help combat the problems of sedentary youth by bringing quality, daily physical education back to the schools.
Instead of putting physical fitness on the back burner of schools, we need to implement quality, daily physical education as a part of the normal school day curriculum. This includes fitness assessments, tracking, planning and fitness education as a means of working to increase each student’s success in their daily lives as wellas academically.
New research is being conducted and the results are conclusive – being physically active allows students to be more educationally successful. Therefore, schools have an obligation – morally and academically – to help students find daily physical activities that are enjoyable and easy to maintain for a lifetime.
Schools are faced with increasingly difficult decisions when it comes to budgetary issues. Do principals cut teacher positions or programs? With these daunting tasks it is becoming an uphill battle for schools to maintain programs, let alone implement new ones. This is why the Body Mechanics Wellness Foundation is working to team up with community members to raise the necessary funds to bring schools the opportunity to implement wonderful programs that can be life-transforming for students.
Please consider supporting this foundation so that we can fulfill our goal of bringing quality, daily physical education to the schools.
